Variable Frequency Drives
Historically farmers have utilized a diesel based power plant or electric motor to pump water to their crops. Using a diesel engine in this manner is inherently costly. With fuel prices rising and the demand for more conservative solutions not being met the need for a solution to this growing problem for farmers has become a necessity. Fleming Controls and Power Specialties has a solution. By attaching a Variable Frequency Drive to your existing electric motor or in place of a diesel power plant, the drive will lower the amount of energy consumed by the distribution type.
Some of the benefits can be seen as simply a function of using a more energy efficient process to pump water. Some implementations of this have saved as much as 70% on their energy costs. The reduced need for diesel because the pump does not always run at the same demand can yield a return on investment in as little as 1 – 1 1/2 seasons. This also extends the reliability and life of the equipment.
Grants are also available through the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) that can help offset the cost of installing a Variable Frequency System.
